Boost Your Child’s Imagination
Tell each other stories. It’s fun to read to your children at night, but why not mix things up and make up your own story? Engage their creativity and help them feel more involved in your nighttime routine. Your job is to guide your child and encourage them to use their brain in different ways. Take turns making up what happens next in the story. Ask your child questions. Where will the princess go next? Is it raining gumdrops? Let them have the final say in what goes on.
Play games that don’t feel educational, but really are. Do you want your son or daughter to learn how to clean up after themselves? Test their speed and start a timer to see how long it takes your child to put everything back in the box. Give them a goal, like putting everything in one area or separating what goes into the toy box and what goes on the bookshelf. Cheer them on and give them a reward afterwards. The reward can be as simple as a hug. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive, just something positive that makes them happy. This will create a cleaning habit for them and they’ll learn to do it on their own.
Ask them what things are. You already know what color a carrot is or what it’s called when wet droplets fall from the sky. Instead of telling your child when they ask, put the question back on him or her. What does she think it’s called? Does he know what sound a cow makes? Engage their minds, and don’t give up if it takes them a while to get to the right answer. Even if they get it wrong, don’t get upset. Start laughing! Encourage them to explore their own minds and help them reach the right answer. Never do it for them and always keep a positive attitude.
Expose them to new sights and sounds. If you’re always taking your son or daughter to the same park or down the same route when you’re walking the dog, there’s only so much they can learn. When they always see the same things, they may stop asking questions. Take them to a new park or a new friend’s place. Challenge their minds and push them to be curious about their surroundings. Help them engage with their new environment and teach them to not be afraid of new things.
Children constantly need exposure to various environments both in the home and outside. Help them feel like they’re involved in your everyday activities. Give them a reason for what they’re doing—like when you made goals while cleaning. Make everything into a game, so they’ll discover that learning can be fun.

子どもたちは目の前でどんどん成長していきます。脳も進化するばかりで絶えずさまざまなことを問いかけてきますが、彼らを取り巻く世界への好奇心や想像力を育てるにはどうしたらいいでしょうか？私たち親は、どうやったら楽しませながら物事を子どもたちに教えられるでしょう？
【お互いのストーリーを伝え合う】
夜の読み聞かせは楽しいものですが、色々ごちゃ混ぜにして自分たちのオリジナルストーリーを作ってみてはいかがでしょう？子どもたちの創造力を促し、夜の日課にしっかり関わっているのだと実感させてあげましょう。皆さんのなさるべきことは子どもたちを導き、いつもとは異なる方法で頭を使うよう励ますことです。物語の中で次に何が起きるか、子どもたちと順番に考えましょう。質問もしてあげて下さい。お姫様は次にどこへ向かうでしょう？ガムドロップの雨は降っていますか？どうなるかの最終決定権は子どもにあげて下さいね。
【実は教育的でいて、そうとは感じさせないようなゲームをする】
皆さんは息子や娘に自分で後片付けができるようになってほしいですか？子どもが全てのものを箱に戻すのにどれくらいの時間が掛かるか、タイマーを用意してテストしてみましょう。全部を一箇所に集めたり、おもちゃ箱や本棚に戻すべきものを分別したりと目標を作ってあげましょう。しっかり応援して、終わったらご褒美もあげて下さい。抱きしめてあげるようなシンプルなもので構いません。複雑だったり大げさなゲームである必要はないので、前向きに楽しめるようなものにしてあげましょう。掃除の習慣が身に付きますし、自分でどうしたらいいのか子どもたちが学ぶことができますよ。
【それが何か尋ねる】
皆さんはすでに人参の色や、空から降る水滴を何と呼ぶかご存知ですよね。子どもたちがそうしたことを尋ねてきた時、ただ答える代わりに質問をし返してみて下さい。何て呼ぶと思う？牛はどんなふうに鳴くかな？思考を促し、正しい答えにたどり着くまで時間が掛かっても諦めないで下さい。たとえ子どもが間違っても、叱ったりしないで下さいね。笑ってあげましょう！自分の頭の中を冒険するよう促し、答えを見つける手伝いをしてあげます。代わりに答えるようなことは決してせずに、常に前向きな姿勢で向き合って下さい。
【新しいものを見たり聞いたりする】
もし皆さんが子どもたちを毎回同じ公園に連れて行ったり、同じルートを通って犬の散歩をしているのであれば、学べることは限られていきます。いつも同じものばかり見ていたら、質問することも止めてしまうかもしれません。時には新しい公園や、新しいお友達のところへ連れて行ってあげましょう。思考を刺激し、身の回りのことに好奇心を抱くよう後押しします。目新しい環境に馴染むよう手助けし、新しいものは怖くないことを教えてあげて下さい。
家の中でも外でも、子どもたちは常にさまざまな環境に触れ続ける必要があります。日々の活動に自分が大いに関わっているのだと子どもたちが自覚できるよう手助けしてあげましょう。掃除の時に目標を作ったように、行動に理由を与えて下さい。どんなことも遊びを交え、学ぶことが楽しいと思えるようにしてあげましょうね。
