Sing along or read along?
But which of these is more effective? They are both excellent, but it depends on each child. Imagine a child enjoying a book versus a child enjoying singing and dancing along to songs or music videos. They both learn and enjoy English, but through different approaches. The question is, “Which does your child prefer?” Let’s look at when and how to use each method.
Young children are usually full of energy –– sometimes too much! How can we teach English to such lively and energetic children? This is when singing works better than quietly reading books. Songs are fun for the kids, especially when they like to sing and dance, as many do. It’s important to select a song appropriate to the child’s age. A five-year-old won’t learn much from songs that teenagers prefer. Simple songs are a good start, paying attention to the personal preferences of the child. They’ll definitely get more out of songs they like –– and have more fun. Repetition will help the child learn the lyrics and perfect their pronunciation. The more they sing a particular song, the stronger their listening and speaking skills become. When they have developed some mastery of one song, introduce a new one. With some songs, teaching the meaning of the lyrics can be done through action and gesture –– and this works especially well with high-spirited children.
On the other hand, some children prefer a quiet classroom without noise or singing. These children will enjoy learning English through reading books. Every child begins to learn how to read with the ABCs. Some children like books with lots of pictures, while others prefer more detail. Many children enjoy reading along to books when the reader makes different voices for each character. As with songs, the books chosen should be age-appropriate. Reading aloud helps with the child’s speaking and pronunciation. And of course, reading books introduces new words to them. When they understand what each word means, they can begin to use them. Rhyming words can be a fun way of reviewing and playing around with the words they learn. Children with calmer, shyer personalities can learn English effectively through reading along with books and flashcards. With such a child, read as much as you can together anytime, anywhere!
Each child is unique. It’s important to use the right learning approach complementing their personality. Whether it is reading or singing, the right choice will motivate their English study by being fun and enjoyable. So have fun singing and reading together!!!

しかし、どちらがより効果的でしょうか?歌うことも、読むことも素晴らしい方法ですが、何が合ってい るかは子供たちによって変わってくるでしょう。本を楽しんでいる子供と、歌や音楽ビデオに合わせて 歌って踊っている子供たちを想像してみてください。どちらも英語を楽しく学んでいるようですが、アプ ローチの仕方が違います。ここで大事なことは、「あなたの子供は何をすることが好きなのか」です。そ こで、それぞれの方法の使い時について見てみましょう。

一方で、歌うことではなく静かな教室や場所を好む子供たちもいます。このような子供たちは、本など の読み物を通して英語を学ぶことが向いているでしょう。多くの子供たちはABCから読み始めます。絵が たくさんある本が好きな子や、文字が多い本が好きな子がいます。登場人物ごとに声を変えて読みきかせ るとより楽しく感じられるでしょう。歌と同様に、年齢に適した本を選ぶようにしましょう。音読は子供 たちの話す力と発音の習得に役立ちます。また、本を読むことで、新しい言葉を見つけることができま す。新しい単語それぞれの意味を理解できるようになれば、自分の言葉として使うことができます。また 韻を踏んだ単語は、遊びながら楽しく英単語を覚えられ、自然とその言い回しが身につきます。物静かで 恥ずかしがりな子供たちにとっては、本とフラッシュカードを一緒に使いながら読むことでさらに効果的 に英語を学ぶことができるでしょう。この方法が向いている子供たちには読む機会をたくさん作ってあげ ましょう!
子供たちは皆個性的です。それぞれの性格に合った適切な学習方法を用いることが重要となります。読 むことなのか、歌うことなのか、正しい選択肢を与えることで英語学習をより楽しく、効果的にすること ができるでしょう。
