Why do we sing in class?
So why do we sing? Why do we spend valuable teaching minutes – of which there can never be enough – singing a song rather than studying textbooks or reading?
Singing helps students remember. Music slows down the language and provides other associations, such as melody, rhythm, musical accompaniment, even motion and gesture, that strengthen the memory and make it faster and easier to both learn and remember what was sung.
You might say, “That’s all fine and good, but what benefit does remembering the lyrics of a song have for my child’s English studies?” Well, numerous studies have shown that singing also aids in learning the sounds, rhythm, and intonation of a language – far more so than just spoken recital. This means that singing doesn’t just teach your children the lyrics of the song, but also helps them learn the fundamentals of the language. And let us not forget: singing is fun! What could be better than to be able to learn while doing something that’s actually enjoyable, rather than just sitting behind a desk and staring at a textbook?
Singing is a crucial tool for any foreign language learner. And in our classrooms it provides a welcome break from the serious focus and concentration that the textbook portion of our study requires. It gives our students a few minutes during which they can relax, do something fun, and recharge their batteries – all while still learning.
Beyond the direct benefits of singing to the language learning experience of our students, we also use the songs we sing to introduce culture. Our songs are carefully chosen to provide our students with broad exposure to the cultures of native English-speaking countries such as the U.S., the U.K., and Australia. Songs, at least as much as stories, are the preservers of culture. Long before people were writing books and making television programs, they were singing around campfires. Their songs tell their story: where they’ve been, what they’ve done, and what they believe. Often, you will find an element of a culture buried in songs that you will not ever see discussed anywhere else, because the assumptions are so fundamental, so taken for granted, that no one feels the need to discuss it anywhere else.
So, by learning and singing our songs, English Now!’s students learn more of English and come closer to an implicit understanding of international culture – all while having fun and getting a much-needed break and energy-recharge in the middle of our lessons.
On top of that, it makes a visit to our school more fun, lively, and enjoyable. What more could you want?

平日の午後や土曜日にEnglish Now!を訪れると、どこかの教室から子供たちの歌声が聞こえてくるで しょう。その時々で曲の長さ、内容、難易度は異なりますが、もちろんすべて英語の歌です。歌を歌うこ とでレッスンは楽しくなり、生徒たちも嬉しそうですが、ただ自然に歌を歌い始めるわけではありませ ん。
では、なぜ私たちは歌うのでしょうか?なぜ教科書で勉強したり本を読んだりするだけではなく、歌を 歌うことに貴重な授業時間を費やすのでしょうか?
歌うことは生徒たちの記憶に残ります。音楽は言葉のスピードを遅くし、メロディー、リズム、伴奏、動 きやジェスチャーなどの他の要素を使うので、言葉が記憶に残りやすくなり、歌の内容をより速く簡単に 習得できます。
「それは分かったけど、歌の歌詞を覚えることが子供の英語の勉強に繋がるの?」と思うかもしれませ ん。 多くの研究により、歌うことはその言葉の音、リズム、イントネーションを学ぶのに役立つことが わかっており、単なる朗読よりもはるかに効果的です。よって、歌うことは子供たちが歌詞の意味を覚え るだけでなく、言語の基礎を学ぶことにも繋がります。そして忘れてはいけないのは、歌うことは楽しい ということです。机に向かって教科書を見つめるだけではなく、実際に楽しいと感じながら学習できるほ ど素晴らしいことはありません。
歌うことは、外国語を学んでいる人にとって非常に重要なツールです。そして、私たちが教科書を学習し ているときの緊張感から解放してくれます。これにより、私たちは学びながら、リラックスし、楽しい体 験を通して、気持ちを切り替えられる時間ができます。
さらに、歌うことは言語を学ぶ上で直接的なメリットをもたらすだけでなく、それぞれの文化を紹介す るためにも活用できます。私たちがレッスンで取り上げる曲は、アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリアな どの英語を母国語とする国々の文化に幅広く触れることができるよう、慎重に選ばれています。歌は、少 なくとも物語と同じように文化を表すものです。人々は本を書いたりテレビ番組を制作したりするずっと 前から、キャンプファイヤーの周りで歌を歌っていました。歌は、私たちがどこにいたのか、何をしてき たのか、何を信じているのかなど、私たちを物語っています。なぜなら、多くの場合、語り継がれる必要 のないと思われている文化の要素が歌の中に含まれているからです。
English Now!の生徒たちは、歌う学習を通して英語を身近に感じ、語られなかった国際文化を理解する ことができます。また歌うことで、適度な気分転換とエネルギーの補充にもなります。
それだけでなく、レッスンが興味深く、活気に満ちた面白味のあるものになるでしょう。歌のあるレッスン以上に理想的なレッスンはないのです。
