Creating Your Own Voice
To make the best use of your English, it can be very beneficial to cultivate particular styles that match the situations and purposes for which you plan to use them.
There are many ways to go about this.
First, there are several sources that can be taken advantage of, such as textbooks, that focus on teaching specific types of English. For example, many textbooks focus on business English. These can be great for giving you more focused material on the specific types of English you wish to learn.
There is also “role-modeling.” This involves finding and “studying” a specific person who's known for their style of English –– a style that matches what you want to learn. Once you've chosen this person, watch videos and listen to podcasts or other sources of them speaking. Model your own speech after theirs. Learn to use the intonation, the idioms, and the vocabulary that they do, and employ them when you speak English yourself.
You can also cultivate “awareness.” When you find yourself in the sort of English language situations in which you want to use a certain style, listen and pay attention to how the native speakers around you speak. What do they say, how do they say it, and how do they behave? By immersing yourself in the situational language of the people around you, you can better absorb it and make that particular style natural for you.
Finally, there is “personalization.” It is good to model your English after situations and people, but individuals stand out and are memorable when they express their own individuality distinct from others. Once you have the basics of your English style down, it's time to experiment. Play around with how you use English, and create your own personal style unique to you.
Remember that you do not have to use only one style for all your English speaking needs. Most native speakers have a variety of styles they use in different circumstances –– just like you might speak one kind of Japanese at home with your friends and family, and an entirely different one at work. An important part of having well-developed and natural English, is having a toolbox with a variety of styles to use as appropriate in different circumstances.
One does not need to master a style before they can start using it; nor are styles permanent. Do not be afraid to experiment and use a style while you're still learning it. And don't be afraid to make changes as your English evolves. Good communication is more art than science, and is forever fluid and changing.
