Kids and “Tangential Learning”
Have you ever found yourself "studying" something even when you had not actually planned to study it––and, moreover, had fun to boot? You have experienced “tangential learning,” a powerful ally for mastering a skill.
Perhaps you've heard the expression "going off on a tangent.” Tangential learning is learning inspired from what may seem to be unrelated media or activities. The tangential stimulus motivates you to deepen your knowledge or improve your skills.
For example, take a look at Pokemon. The story is compelling, there is an easy-to-learn, elemental-based fighting system, and the graphics are well-drawn. Pokemon has motivated kids to develop interests in subjects like animal training and the natural world just from watching water monsters beat fire monsters. Children often spend hours learning the names of hundreds of pokemon.
Ironically, most textbooks regularly pass up opportunities to really grab a young student’s interest through tangential learning.
So it's up to us!
That’s why sitting down and watching an English DVD or reading a book with your child is so important: it provides the opportunity to see what really piques your child’s interest, ask questions, and offer explanation. Once their interest is sparked, their motivation will come from within; all you will need to do is give them the support they need to reach their goals.

子供達が英語を学ぶ上で遭遇する最大の難関の一つは、いかに英語学習の時間を作るか、ということでしょう。子供達自身が英語上達に停滞を感じてしまったり、またはこれまでよりレベルが落ちてしまったように感じる時にも、次のレッスン時までに更なる練習をし、頑張り抜くモチベーションを保つことが上達のカギとも言えるのです。
皆さんは、無我夢中で何かを学習したり、またそれを楽しいと感じたことはありませんか？この行動は "tangential learning (ちょっと触れるだけの学習)"と呼ばれています。実はこれを巧く学習に取り入れることが、成功の秘訣なのです。
"tangential learning (ちょっと触れるだけの学習)" は要するに “going off on a tangent(脇道に逸れる）”することです。つまり、一見「皆さんが取組むべき課題とは何の繋がりもないような情報や活動」から刺激を受ける。その後、そこで得た刺激をもとに、実は私たちは、より自分の知識を深めたり技術を磨いたりしようとするのです。
ポケモンを例に挙げてみましょう。子供達に理解しやすい内容が感動的に展開されていますよね。「木、火、水」といった自然の要素を基に戦う設定で、映像もきれいです。水と火のポケモンが戦うシーンを見ることで動物の育成に興味を持ったり、自然に関心を向ける子供も多いでしょう。そしてたくさんのポケモンの名前を覚えるのに長い時間を掛けたりします。
皮肉なことに、多くの学習テキストは、こうした「ちょっとした学習」で子供達を引きつけることは稀です。ですから、私たちが自ら働きかけなければならないのです。
是非、お子様に英語のDVDを与えて差し上げてください。また親御さまもお子様と一緒に英語の本を読むことをお勧めします。それらを通じ、お子様が何に興味をそそられるのかを発見することができるでしょう。子供達が関心を持ったことに関して、どうぞたくさん質問をし、子供達にはそれについて説明をさせるよう促しましょう。子どもは一度火がつけば、自ずと意欲的になります。周囲の大人がすべきことは、夢に向かう彼らを支えてあげることなのです。
