“My preschooler isn’t learning!
The parents of small children learning English often have many questions expressing their concerns, such as, “Why isn’t my child interested in learning English?” or “Is my child interested in reading?” The most common is probably, “Is my child learning a lot of English?” Being a parent myself, and a teacher who is entrusted everyday with kids having widely different personalities, I would say that these questions cannot be addressed with a “one-size-fits-all” answer.
Children pass through different developmental stages from birth till age seven, and the answers to such questions will depend on what stage the child is currently in. Children have different ways of learning and what’s most appropriate for them at the moment will depend on the individual child’s present physical, social, emotional and language skills.
Here are three hints to pique your preschooler’s interest and help them to love English:
Dig deeper
Identify your child’s interests and incorporate these into their English learning activities. This can also help you understand why your child is acting in a certain way. For example, even though they’re not interested in reading, they might quickly remember the words of a song. Or even though they speak less English than other kids in their class, they really enjoy spending time with English children’s books. Understanding their personalities and interests provides clues as to how to approach learning English at this point in their development.
Play
To captivate a young mind, let your child do what comes naturally: let them play! Allow them to freely experiment without pressure and use their play as a fun tool to entice them to learn English.
Be an example
Most important in motivating a child is to set a good example. Include simple English vocabulary and phrases in your daily life. Don’t be embarrassed. Start small, don’t force English on the child, and make it a natural part of your home environment. This can really motivate your child to pay attention and absorb what he learns in his English classes.
Always keep in mind that children are individuals and will, in all likelihood, reach various developmental milestones earlier or later than other children. Please don’t panic or obsess on whatever is considered “average.” Learning English is not just about studying—it’s a lifestyle.

英語を学ぶ小さな子どもを持つ親は、「なぜうちの子は英語学習に興味を持たないのか？」「どうして読むことに関心を示さないのか？」といった悩みを抱えがちです。最も多い悩みはきっと「ちゃんと英語を習得しているのか？」でしょう。一人の親として、そして毎日さまざまな性格の子ども達を預かる講師として言えるのは、「全ての子どもに当てはまる」答えはないということです。
子ども達は生まれてから7歳の頃までに異なる発達段階を経験します。上で取り上げた質問に対する答えは、子どもが現時点でどの段階にいるかに依るところが大きいでしょう。子ども達にはそれぞれ学習の仕方がありますし、現時点でどの方法がふさわしいかは、その時のその子の身体的、社会的、感情的、そして言語的な能力により異なるのです。
子どもの英語に対する興味を高め、英語を好きになるヒントを３つ紹介します。
【掘り下げる】
子どもがどんなことに興味を持っているか把握し、英語学習のアクティビティにも組み込みましょう。これは子どもの行動を理解するのにも役立ちますよ。例えば本や読むことに興味がない子でも、歌に出てくる言葉はすぐに覚えてしまうかもしれません。また、他の子に比べてあまり英語を話さないけれど、英語の児童書を心から楽しんで読むような子もいます。子どもの性格や関心を理解すれば、現在の成長段階においてどのように英語学習にアプローチすればいいか、きっかけを掴むことにも繋がります。
【遊ぶ】
子どもの心を掴むには、ありのまま行動させるのも一つです。そう、遊ばせましょう！プレッシャーをかけることなく自由にさせ、その遊びを楽しい道具にして、英語学習に関心を向かわせましょう。
【お手本になる】
子どものモチベーションを上げる上で一番大切なのは、良い見本を示すことです。シンプルな英単語やフレーズを皆さんの日常生活に取り込んでみましょう。恥ずかしがらないで下さいね。小さなことから始め、子どもに強制することなく、英語を家庭環境の自然な一部分にして下さい。こうした取り組みにより子ども達は熱心に英語のレッスンに参加するようになりますし、多くのことを吸収できるようになります。
常に念頭に置いてもらいたいのは、子ども達はそれぞれ一人の人間であること、そしてさまざまな発達段階には他の子達よりもほぼ確実に早く、もしくは遅く辿り着くということです。「平均」という言葉に惑わされて慌てたり、思い悩んだりするのはやめましょう。
英語学習はただの勉強ではなく、ライフスタイルでもあるのですから。
