How to Help Kids Think Outside the Box

Fostering both an imagination and critical thinking is a crucial part of childhood. Children need to develop their own personalities and grow into unique people.

How can we encourage our children to be forward thinkers and leaders?

How can we guide them to become the independent men or women we want them to grow up to be?

Start by exposing your children to a variety of experiences. Create opportunities to join sports, art projects, and community events so they can discover their likes and dislikes. It’s important to not tell them who they are supposed to be, but rather show them their choices and guide them towards a good life path.

Encourage positive thinking and decision-making. Every chance you get, ask them what they want to do over the summer. If you get the standard “I don’t know” answer, then give them options for possible activities. For example, you might ask, “Would you like to play at the playground or walk through the park today?” Depending on their age, include visuals—photos or video—so they fully understand what you’re proposing.

Similarly, to encourage your children to be inquisitive, ask them about how things work in the world. For example, you might ask, “How do you think I was able to start the car?”

If you give your children choices and the chance to think for themselves, they will grow up with the habits of independence and asking good questions. You could start with simple activities, like going for a walk, then gradually encourage them to consider the world beyond what is right in front of them.

Expose them to the big, wide world and help them learn to analyze the reality they experience.
