Keep English Fun!
I was interested in studying a foreign language, but my choices were limited to Spanish, German, French or Latin. Now, these are great offerings, but I was interested in none of them. My best friend was from Finland, so I wanted to learn Finnish. I was also interested in learning Japanese or Chinese, but my school didn't have teachers for these. I tried for German, missed the lottery, and finally was forced to take Spanish.
At first it was interesting, but there were some problems. North Carolina has a large Hispanic population and for an easy "A" many of the Hispanic kids took Spanish. It was frustrating for a raw beginner to try and speak Spanish when there were native speakers in the same class!
Also, there’s no getting around the fact that learning a foreign language is very difficult. It takes lots of time and patience, and I only had Spanish class twice a week. Outside of class, I had no one to practice with, no access to Spanish media, or any fun way to study. I just tried to memorize vocabulary from my textbook.
Spanish class became a chore, and Spanish study went from an exciting challenge to a troublesome, hated misadventure. I HATED Spanish and so I had a very difficult time focusing and improving. I eventually became so frustrated that, when my academic requirements were satisfied, I quit.
The moral of the story? Keep English fun for your children! Rent American cartoons from the video rental shop and watch them together. Listen to English music or try to learn an American song to sing together at karaoke. If your child grows up with English as a fun part of his life, his English study will continue to be exciting and will be associated with positive emotions. It's much easier to do well at something you enjoy, and the more fun your child has with his study, the more and the faster he will learn.

Studying English takes time and effort, and you won't be fluent in a month. Don't give up, and do your best!

「楽しむ」ことの大切さ
中学時代、私の学区では生徒の国際化を図るべきだということになりました。私たち生徒が知らされたのは外国語の授業を取らなくてはいけないこと、そしてその言語は３種類以上の中から選ぶことになるといったものでした。
外国語学習そのものには興味がありました。ただ、提示されたのはスペイン語、ドイツ語、フランス語、そしてラテン語。学ぶ価値があるとは思いますが、私はそのどれにも関心が持てませんでした。と言うのも私の親友がフィンランド出身だったもので、取るならフィンランド語、もしくは興味のある日本語や中国語が希望だったんです。しかし残念ながら、私の学校にはそれらの言語を教えられる先生がいませんでした。第一希望だったドイツ語の抽選に漏れてしまい、結局、私はスペイン語を勉強することになりました。
最初は楽しく思えていたのですが、後々、問題が出てきました。私の出身地であるノースカロライナ州にはスペイン系アメリカ人が多く、簡単にA評価を取れてしまうような人たちが大勢スペイン語を選択していたのです。ネイティブに囲まれた環境でずぶの素人である自分がスペイン語を話そうとするのがどれ程きついことか、ご想像いただけるでしょう！
そもそも、外国語学習はかなり難しいのです。長い時間も我慢も必要なのに、授業は週にたったの２回だけ。その上、教室から出てしまえば練習相手も、スペイン語のメディアに触れる機会も、楽しい勉強法なんてものも見つかりませんでした。ただひたすらテキストの単語を暗記するのみです。
その内だんだんとスペイン語の授業が面倒になってきてしまいました。わくわくするような挑戦だったはずが、厄介でつまらない災難なようなものに変わってしまったのです。はっきり言ってスペイン語が嫌いだったので、集中も続かないし、上達もしませんでした。もうイライラするばかりで、必要な単位だけ取って、結局すぐに受講をやめてしまいました。
私が何を言いたいかお分かりですか？そう、効果的に学習させたいなら、子供たちが英語を楽しいと思える環境を作ってあげて下さい。レンタルショップで借りたアメリカのアニメを一緒に観てみましょう。アメリカの歌を一緒に聞いてカラオケで歌うのも良いですね。無理なく生活の一部にしてしまうことができれば、子供たちの中で英語はずっとわくわくするようなもののままでいられます。きっと明るく楽しいイメージを持ち続けられることでしょう。好きこそ物の上手なれ、と言いますよね。楽しいと思えば、それだけ上達も早まります。

英語の勉強には時間も努力も必要ですし、一ヶ月やそこらでペラペラにはなれません。粘り強く頑張っていきましょう！
