Autumn refocus: What’s most important?

In many countries, autumn means new beginnings. A new school year traditionally began in the fall since, in earlier times, this was when the harvest was in—which the whole family helped with—and the shorter days meant a little less farm work and more time to study.
Autumn is a good time to review where we’re going with our children’s English and what’s important. At English Now!, we aim at developing all of the basic language skills, including speaking, listening, reading and writing. But if there were only one skill I could impart to a Japanese child studying English, it would unquestionably be pronunciation.
Human language is inherently based on sound, and sound must be where we start. The biggest obstacles to Japanese English being understood internationally are pronunciation and intonation—in other words, sound.
Without exaggerating, the Japanese transliteration of foreign languages into katakana could be considered the root of all evil here. Numerous sounds making up foreign languages simply cannot be created with katakana. Forcing them into katakana anyway results in Japanese being able to more easily speak a foreign language to each other, while being unintelligible to the native speakers of those languages.
The earlier the child is exposed to good English pronunciation, the better. This is why English Now! works so hard to provide an all-English environment, only skilled native English-speaking teachers, thorough phonics practice, and—last, but not least—song.
At English Now!, the child is immersed in a learning environment where using English is a matter of course. It’s natural and expected. It’s very difficult to provide this at home, where the child has usually grown up communicating almost entirely in his native language since birth. Most children feel strange and even rebel against using English at home. It just seems wrong. On the other hand, when the child comes to English Now!, he enters an environment almost entirely in English and so it’s much easier for him to make the transition to using English himself.
It goes without saying that the most accurate English pronunciation and intonation will be learned from native speakers. For this reason, all of our teachers are native speakers. They are not simply assistants to non-native speaking teachers. And since we rotate our teachers among our classes, each child is thoroughly exposed to a wide variety of authentic native English with respect to region, accent, pace, intonation, subtle variation in pronunciation, age and, of course, gender. Consequently, our students are better able to comprehend the English of many different people.
Our phonics work is thorough and profound. We prioritize phonics highly, not just for teaching how to read, but for teaching accurate pronunciation. Phonics study is absolutely essential and its starts with the very first day of our Pre-kids’ classes.
Finally, it may seem less significant, but English Now!’s children’s classes always include a new “Song of the Month.” This is not just for fun. Singing in English is invaluable, not only for teaching natural pronunciation, but for getting the child accustomed to natural English rhythm and intonation. Rhythm, intonation and stress are often ignored with typical textbook study, but are absolutely unavoidable when singing. Lyrics attempted to be sung with katakana pronunciation and Japanese intonation simply won’t fit into the music.
When the Japanese child finally encounters formalized English study in school, it is unfortunately all too likely to be taught with poor pronunciation. If he or she already has a strong foundation in good pronunciation, this is much less likely to be a problem. But without that strong foundation, the child will probably work hard at learning the poorly pronounced English, only to have to painfully unlearn it someday in the future when international English communication is called for.

Just do it!

Over my years of teaching, several students have stood out for their ability to succeed in English communication abroad despite having had little higher education and what would be considered by testing to be low aptitude. Typically, these were business people who had a clear, unequivocal job to get done, and weren’t going to give up until they accomplished it.
They were never the top-of-the-class, “good student” types. In fact, in their youth they may have been known more for their disregard for authority. Back in school, they probably even disdained English study. But as adults now, their entrepreneurial pursuits have put them in the situation where they must use English. It’s not an option.
They rarely say, “I’m not ready yet!,” “My English isn’t good enough,” or “Maybe someday…” Business won’t wait. They just go and do it. And somehow they get the job done.
How do they pull this off?
They waste no time trying to be perfect. They know that all they need is to be communicative enough to get their message across and to gather what the other person is trying to say enough to strike an agreement. Furthermore, as business people, they realize that communication involves far more than grammar and vocabulary. Their interpersonal skills have already been well developed in their daily business dealings: posture, body language, eye contact, confidence, listening, respect, intuition, a good handshake—the list goes on. Finally, above all, they have determination. They will not quit.
As noted before, Japanese society tends be detail-oriented and focused on correctness. Such behavior helps Japan shine in many undertakings, but there’s a dark side. Preoccupation with detail and correctness can leave one literally ‘speechless’ when attempting to communicate in a foreign language.
The entrepreneurs who go abroad with even below-average English ability and, nevertheless, successfully communicate to get their business done are risk-takers who don’t fall into this trap. They have a job to get done, and they do it. They measure their own success by this, not by the excellence of their English. These are some of my favorite students and are a joy to teach because they go right out and implement what they learn.

We make their English more ‘functional’ by directly addressing the language points that will help them most in successfully communicating. We listen for mistakes that make the speaker incomprehensible and address those first. We save details for later. Katakana pronunciation is to blame for most of the trouble foreigners have comprehending Japanese English, and why Japanese have so much trouble comprehending spoken English.

彼らは決してクラスで一番の「優等生」ではありませんでした。それどころか、校則などを無視して目を付けられていたようなタイプかもしれません。学生時代を省みれば、英語すら大して必要なものではないと思っていた人が多いのではないでしょうか。しかし大人になった今、仕事の達成や利益を追い求めるその精神が、英語が絶対に必要な立場に彼らを置くのです。英語を使うか否か、その選択肢は与えられていません。
「まだ準備ができてない！」「そんなに英語できないし」「いつかその時が来たら...」なんてことを彼らは言いません。仕事は待ってくれないのです。ただ現場に行って、取り組むだけ。そして彼らはどうにかその仕事をやり遂げてしまうのです。
どうしてそんなことが可能なのでしょうか？
彼らは余計な時間を過ごしてまで完璧さを求めません。自分のメッセージを相手に伝えて、相手の言いたい事を汲み取って、そして合意を勝ち取るのに十分なコミュニケーション力があれば良いことを知っているからです。更に言えば、こうしたビジネスマンはコミュニケーションが単に文法や語彙によるものではないことを理解しています。姿勢やボディランゲージ、アイコンタクト、自信、相手に耳を傾けることや尊敬の念、丁寧な握手...挙げていけばきりがありませんが、日々の仕事を通して、彼らの中にはこうした優れた対人能力が既に備わっているのです。そして何より、彼らには決意があります。絶対に挫けたりしません。
以前にも指摘した通り、日本社会には細部に気を使い、正確さに重きを置く傾向があります。様々な分野においてこの性質が光を放っていますが、しかしそこには影の側面も存在します。外国語でコミュニケーションを取ろうとする中で、この細部と正確さへの強いこだわりは、文字通り「無言」を生み出してしまいます。
平均以下の英語力で海外に繰り出し、しかしそれでも上手くコミュニケーションを取ってビジネスを成功させてしまうような冒険家は、このような罠に落ちません。彼らはただ、やるべき仕事を成すだけです。彼らは自分の成果を英語の完璧さではなく、仕事の成功ではかっています。
さて、ENGLISH NOW!はこのような「実用的な英語」に既に熟達している人達に、どんなことを提供できるでしょうか？
私達はコミュニケーションの面で大きな効果を発揮する言葉の要点を直接お伝えすることで、彼らの英語をより「使える」ものにしていきます。話し手の言いたいことを分かりにくしてしまう要因となるミスに耳を傾け、まずはそれを指摘します。細かいところに口を出すのはもっと後です。私達は特に、発音の鍛え直しに力を入れます。彼らにカタカナ発音を捨てさせるのです。これだけのことで、海外でのコミュニケーションがぐっとスムーズになるのですから。カタカナ発音こそ、外国人が日本人の話す英語を理解する時の枷であり、そして逆に、日本人が外国人の話す英語を理解できない要因なのです。

これは上述の彼らに、そして皆さんにとっても有効なはずですよ。

私達はコミュニケーションの面で大きな効果を発揮する言葉の要点を直接お伝えすることで、彼らの英語をより「使える」ものにしていきます。話し手の言いたいことを分かりにくしてしまう要因となるミスに耳を傾け、まずはそれを指摘します。細かいところに口を出すのはもっと後です。私達は特に、発音の鍛え直しに力を入れます。彼らにカタカナ発音を捨てさせるのです。これだけのことで、海外でのコミュニケーションがぐっとスムーズになるのですから。カタカナ発音こそ、外国人が日本人の話す英語を理解する時の枷であり、そして逆に、日本人が外国人の話す英語を理解できない要因なのです。
