Why Textbooks!?

What is the role of the textbooks we use at English Now!? Where do they fit in with our focus on mimi-kara?
On the face of it, doesn’t using textbooks seem inconsistent with our core strategy of focusing on listening and speaking? Well, if we were using them the way most of us experienced in school, you would be right. But we don’t.
English Now! does not publish its own textbooks. Maybe we should. It’s certainly a lucrative business strategy for many others. But for us, the textbooks are merely a jumping-off point. They provide a conduit for us to channel our mimi-kara focus. The textbooks are just raw material to exploit—a framework within which to make our magic. The teaching comes from the teachers—the magicians.
Don’t get me wrong. This is hardly a situation where any old textbook will do. Indeed, we choose our textbooks carefully. Our first requirement is that the textbook is supplemented with quality audio using realistic, expressive native speakers’ voices in realistic situations. This is essential for both classroom study and for the student to review with at home. The English itself must be modern and contemporary American English applied intelligently to contemporary topics. Grammar, vocabulary, and other structure and patterns must be introduced in a logical, timely progression that the student can make use of immediately.
All textbooks include a variety of exercises, many of which do not include audio, and are sometimes even indicated to be for reading or writing. We don’t do them this way. We shamelessly ignore the author’s intentions and change everything in the book into creative listening and speaking work focusing on natural intonation and expression. We never forsake mimi-kara.
English Now! is not here to drudgingly force you to plod through a textbook. We extract the best, most valuable parts, and bring them to life.

English Now!の学習におけるテキストの役割とは何でしょう？教材は私達の目指す「耳から英語を学ぶ」方針にどうフィットするでしょうか？
リスニングとスピーキングを重視する、と公言している以上、一見したところではテキストの使用自体が私達の方針に矛盾しているように感じられるかもしれません。皆さんが中学校や高校で体験したような使い方をすれば、確かにその通りでしょう。しかし、実情は異なります。
English Now!は独自のテキストを発行していません。もしかしたら、作成すべきなのかもしれませんね。明らかに教材費で採算を取っているスクールも少なくないようですから。しかし私達にとってテキストはただの出発点に過ぎません。「耳から学ぶ」の方針に繋がる一つのパイプをもたらすだけです。テキストは単に生かされるべき素材の一つであり、マジックの舞台となる枠組みです。そして勿論マジックを生み出すのはマジシャン、つまり講師なのです。
悪く取らないでもらいたいのですが、古いテキストでは力が及ばない部分というのも少なからずありますね。実際、私達はかなり注意深くテキストを選んでいます。最重視するのはそのオーディオにおける会話の質です。実際起こりうる場面が想定されているか、現実的な表現を感情を込めてネイティブスピーカーが発話しているかに私達は着目します。教室でのみならず、ご自宅での学習においても役立つ部分ですからね。そしてテキストには「今」アメリカで実際に使われている英語が現代社会のトピックに合理的に適用されているかという点も、深く考慮しています。文法、語彙、その他の構成や形式は論理的かつ進行具合が適切で、そして何より生徒の皆さんがすぐに活用できるようになっていなくてはいけません。
世の中には様々なエクササイズを含んだテキストが何千何万と出版されていて、オーディオが含まれていないものも少なくありません。中にはリーディングとライティングの学習のみを目的としたものもあります。しかし、私達はそういった使い方はしません。時には大胆に著者の意図から外れたことを行い、自然なイントネーションや表現を学べるよう、リスニングとスピーキング重視で中身を組み替えてしまうこともあります。
English Now!ではひたすら時間を掛けて、黙々とテキストに齧りつくような指導はしません。生徒の皆さんにとって最も価値ある部分を抽出し、学んだ内容を生活の一部として取り込んでもらえるよう努めています。
指導の本質は、講師にこそあるのです。
