What is a good teacher?

In martial arts, I learned that the particular style of martial arts I was training in really didn’t matter as long as the teacher was good. Whether it was aikido, karate, tai chi or boxing didn’t matter: if the teacher was superior, it was worthwhile; if the teacher was inferior, it was a waste of time.
School was the same. I sought out the best, most talented teachers because that’s where I knew I would truly learn. I didn’t even care what subject they taught. The best teachers would make any subject worthwhile. I knew I would learn.
As a whole, native English-speaking teachers in Japan have earned a dubious reputation both here and abroad. Many believe that such teachers are unprofessional, overpaid slackers who can’t find gainful employment in their own countries. Such teachers have simply fallen into the good fortune of being able to make good money with little effort simply by peddling their own native tongue which they acquired only because they were born in the right place.
Harsh words, but unfortunately there’s truth in this stereotype and the prejudice is all too often justified. There are many such teachers and it’s a waste of your time spending more than just a couple of lessons with them.
Seek out the truly gifted teachers and stick with them. Such teachers will not only deeply understand their subject matter, but will be sensitive to the needs and wants of their students and be able to truly communicate their instruction in a manner appropriate to the individual.
They take pride in their work and are ever in pursuit of excellence. They will not be one-pattern, follow-the-numbers teachers who treat every student and class the same without personalized attention and instruction.
They will be professional, respectful and humble. They will not be so full of themselves with the “I am Sensei!” attitude that they use classes as their soapbox to dominate their students and force their own opinions.
They will be well-informed about a wide range of subjects, but will truly listen to you and your needs.
They may be strict in their teaching, but they will be positive and inspiring.
Our goal at English Now! is to provide you with exactly these kinds of teachers: teachers who rise far above the average native English teacher you may have experienced; who know how to effectively teach each student in the manner best suited to that individual; and who truly care about the progress of every single student and make it their goal to achieve.

武道を習うにあたり、私はどんな種目に取り組もうとも、「全ては先生次第だ」ということを実感しました。合気道、空手、太極拳やボクシングだろうと何でもそうです。先生が優れていれば学ぶ価値があり、そうでなければただ時間の無駄だったのです。
スクールも同じです。自分の経験に基づき、私は最高で優れた先生達を探し出しました。これまで過去にどの教科を教えていたかは問題ではありません。優秀な先生はどんな内容も価値のあるものにしてくれますから...。
総じて、日本にいるネイティブの英会話講師は日本でも海外でも訝しい評判を得ます。多くの方が「(彼らは)プロとは言えず、任務以上にお金を貰っている怠け者で、自国では良い仕事が見つけられなかっただけの人たち」と思っているのです。彼らは英語圏で育ったというだけで得られた言葉(英語)を、たいした努力もなく普及することにより、高賃金を稼ぐ幸運に巡り会ったのだ、と。
厳しい言葉ですが、残念なことにこんな固定概念や先入観の中には事実もあり、大抵の噂は正当化されてしまいます。実際にそんな先生はたくさんいますし、皆さんがそんな彼らのレッスンを受け続けるのは全くの時間の無駄という訳です。
是非、優れた先生を探し出し、その人の下で学びましょう。そういった先生は自分の専門分野だけでなく、生徒が何を必要とし、求めているかを敏感に察知します。そして一人ひとりに相応しい方法で生徒と向き合うことができるのです。
彼らは自分の仕事に誇りを持ち、常に優秀さを追い求めています。決してワンパターンでもなく、各生徒への配慮を怠り、皆を一緒くたにすることなども致しません。
優秀な講師は常に礼儀正しく、謙虚なプロフェッショナルです。「私は先生だ！」という態度でクラスを自分の演説の場にし、生徒を思いのまま行動させようとはしないはずです。
様々な分野に精通していますが、そういった指導者は、驕ることなく相手の話を良く聞き、相手が必要としているものを理解してくれるものなのです。
良き指導者はレッスン中は厳しくとも、きっと前向きにあなたを奮い立たせてくれることでしょう。
