Electronic dictionaries: a help or hindrance?

Almost everyone who attends English Now! has one. You know: those Sony/Casio/Canon/Seiko/etc wonder-dictionaries that hold a bazillion words for every situation imaginable. But do they really help you or do they get in the way of you improving your English?
For private study: YES, they’re a Godsend. They save time and increase efficiency.
For English class and live interaction with native speakers: NO, they are a serious problem and prevent you from developing the communication skills necessary to join into a real, natural conversation.
Live communication requires that your attention is 100% present in the moment. Distracting yourself with dictionary word searches pulls you out of the conversation. You will not be paying full attention and your listening will suffer badly. Consequently, you’ll be unable to respond in any sort of a timely manner and the rhythm and pace of the conversation will be broken––perhaps irretrievably.
It’s also very frustrating for the person you are supposed to be communicating with. Constantly pausing for long breaks while you consult the dictionary kills the energy of the exchange. Few will have the inclination or patience to bear with you.
Perfectionism seriously dampens your progress in studying English. Obsession with always using “correct” English will cause you to over-hesitate and will ultimately leave you out of the conversation. A willingness––even eagerness––to make mistakes is essential to speedy progress. Try to say what you want to say as best you can with the words you know without using the dictionary––and gestures and pantomime can go a long way, too.
As for those difficult words that come up in class that you want to check: make a quick note with a pen and look them up in your dictionary after class. This is actually a good opportunity to review the class and reinforce what you learned.

電子辞書ーこれはENGLISH NOW!の生徒様のほとんどの方もお持ちのことでしょう。Sony, Casio, Canon, Seiko等いずれのメーカーも引けを取らないこの素晴らしいメカは、膨大な単語数を保有し、想像しうるあらゆるシチュエーションに対応しています。しかしこの電子辞書、果たしてどこまで役立つのでしょう？
私個人の意見では、ずばり個人の学習用には "YES"! まさにそれは「天の恵み」とさえ言える程！短時間に効率的に単語の意味を調べる等をお求めの場合、これらは抜群の力を発揮します。ところが英会話のレッスン中、もしくは実際にネイティブとの会話ではどうでしょうか？それは間違いなく"NO"と言えるでしょう！（実はこれはかなり切実な問題とも言えるのです！）
会話中に電子辞書を用いることは（それが例えレッスンであれ）、リアル且つナチュラル会話に欠かせないコミュニケーションスキルをむしろ阻止し「誤解を招きやすい溝」を作り上げます。
生きたコミュニケーションには何が必要でしょう？それは「私たちの注意を100％、今ここに注ぐこと」です！辞書での「適切な単語探し」は会話の絶妙なリズムを壊してしまう他、いきいきとした言葉のやりとりをも奪いかねません。辞書に夢中なあまり、ご自身の注意力が散漫となりリスニングにも悪影響を及ぼすことでしょう。結果、相づちのタイミングを失い、また会話そのもののペースも壊されることとなるのです ー それはおそらく修復できない程までに！また意思疎通を求めていた相手にをも不快な思いをさせてしまうことでしょう。「単語探し」のための、この頻繁な長～い沈黙はコミュニケーション本来の生き生きとしたエネルギーを抹殺します。（その空気感がお好みの少数派も存在するかもしれませんが...。）
「完璧主義」は英語上達の足を引っ張ります。常に『正しい英語を使わなくてはいけない』という強迫観念は、英語学習者を震撼させ、結果的に「会話力そのもの」を私たちから奪うのです！英語の目覚ましい上達において「間違いをする」こと、それ自体もエネルギーであり（例えそれが欲望と呼ばれる類いであれ）、必須のものである、と言えるでしょう。
ENの皆様には是非に、ご自身が知りうる限りの単語力を駆使しながら（辞書なしで）、自己表現に挑戦していただきたいと考えます。ジェスチャーも一役買ってくれるはずです。
では「英会話のレッスン中に調べたい言葉があった場合、どうしたらいい？」ーその場合、知りたい言葉をさっとメモし授業の後で調べるのです！実はこれは復習にも絶好のチャンスにもなるのですヨ！

The parents' role in their child's English study

How can the parents of our English Now! child students ensure that their child gets the most possible out of his classes here?
Kids attend classes at English Now! once or twice a week. Especially for a young child, a week is a very long time and it’s hard for him to keep focused on something that only happens once a week.
This is why, you, the parents of our students have a very important role to play. You must keep English alive in your home. It can’t be just a once-a-week naraigoto.
Check the email class summaries we send out to you after class. See for yourself what your child studied today. Review it at least twice before the next class. Read through it together. Do the workbook exercises and other homework together. Act out the dialogs with different voices.
With small kids, even if you have no confidence in your own English pronunciation, you can still practice writing together.
Be playful––don’t be bossy or critical or your child will end up hating it.
Make English a part of your home environment. Children learn quickest what is relevant and has meaning in their everyday life. It must be more than just something studied and once-a-week is certainly not enough. Watch movies and TV shows in English (Skapa or ACCS are helpful here). Don’t watch Disney movies in Japanese: switch to the English! Have plenty of English books around the house (take advantage of the Tsukuba Public Library). Even play music in English.
Simply put, surround your child with English.
Finally, get your courage up and try having an only-English day once a week, where the whole family uses only English. Ideally, English should be something the whole family is actively using, not just something the kids study.
親御様のサポート ー お子様が当校で学習した内容を確実にモノにしていくために ーとは果たしてどんなものでしょうか？ENキッズの皆様には、週に1回もしくは2回の通学をいただいております。しかし、実は「週に１回のみの学習」というのは、(特に年齢の小さいお子様には) 次のレッスン迄にとても長い時間が空くということなのです。するとお子様は「週に1度のみの「出来事」にそんなに夢中になってられない」という事になりがちです。
私たちは、そこで、親御様に是非にこの重要な役割を担っていただきたいと提案します！親御様方にはご自宅でも英語が「生きた」ものであり続ける様にサポートをしていただきたいのです！決して当校での学習が数ある「週１回の習い事」の１つになってしまわないように...。
まずは当校のレッスン後に配信されるクラス内容を必ずご確認ください。親御様ご自身で、お子様がその日に学習したことを把握していただきたいと存じます。そして次回クラス迄に、最低２回は復習させるようにしてください。学習した部分をお子様と一緒に読む、宿題を一緒に取り組む、様々な声色で、学習したセリフを一緒に演じてみる、これらは素晴らしいアイデアと言えるでしょう！小さなお子様の場合、もし親御様がご自身の英語発音力に自信がなかっとしても、ご一緒に練習をすることは全くその上達の妨げにはなりません！遊びながらこれを行ってみて下さい！ ー 決してお子様を叱ったり批判的になさらないように！これは結果的に「英語嫌い」へと導きます。
どうぞ英語を「家庭のイベントの１つ」に取り入れてください。お子様は生活に根付いたものから順に覚えていきます。「週に１回の習い事」の域を超えなくてはなりません。英語で映画やテレビを見る。（スカパやACCSは日本では役立つことでしょう）ディズニーのテレビを日本語で見るなんて、決してなさらないでください！必ず英語へと音声を替えてください。ご家庭に英語の本を存分に用意して差し上げましょう。（つくば市立図書館を是非ご活用ください）また英語の音楽を流すこともいいでしょう。つまり、お子様を「英語漬け」にして差し上げるのです！
そして,,, どうぞお子様を勇気づけ、また週に１度は「英語のみDay」を定め、ご家族中でこれにトライしてみてください。更に欲を言えば、ご家族の皆さんが興味のあるアクティビティと英語が結びついていることが理想です。ー英語がお子様の学習のためにのみばかりにあるのではなく...。
