Autumn Learning & Halloween Fun at English Now!

This month, English Now! is handing out the kids’ report cards. (Make sure you get yours from your child!) In these, we provide an evaluation of your child’s English skills and progress, along with suggestions for how to help your child at home.
I’d like to emphasize the importance of a few of these suggestions.
First, please see that your child gets to class on time. In fact, arriving a bit early is even better. This gives us a chance to check their homework more carefully and offer a little one-on-one coaching with their English.
Next, please make sure your child completes their homework. This may seem obvious, but we often see children repeatedly failing to do so—and it has a big effect on their progress. Please check the email report we send after each class to confirm the homework assignment. Typically, it includes pages from the Let’s Begin or Let’s Go Workbook, plus a printout reviewing that day’s material. Help them with their handwriting, and try to see that they don’t rush through it. If it’s too much to finish in one sitting, spread it out over a couple of days. Encourage them to sound out the words as they write them.
If you find that your child hasn’t understood something in the homework, feel free to write a comment on the page (in Japanese or English—red pen is best!). Their teacher will see your note and make sure to review the point in class.
Next, the Let’s Begin / Let’s Go textbooks and workbooks both include online resources, which we strongly encourage you to take advantage of.
The textbook resources can be accessed by computer, smartphone, or tablet through the URL on the inside of the front cover (www.oup/elt/letsgo). No registration is required. You’ll probably need to help your child navigate the site the first time, but after that—depending on age—they may manage on their own. The online textbook resources include videos, an online dictionary, games, and a download page for all the video and audio materials, plus some extras like wallpaper, cards, and coloring pages. Many of our students really enjoy these—they’re simple, fun, and very effective for review.
The Let’s Begin / Let’s Go Workbook online resources provide lots of interactive practice for reviewing what’s been covered in class. Younger children will likely need your help, and since a keyboard is necessary for the exercises, it’s easiest to use a computer. Internet-based English is of course valuable, but try to include as many “real,” hands-on, “analog” items as possible. The idea is to make English an everyday part of life—natural, meaningful, and real—not just a 習い事, something to study only once a week.

October is Halloween at English Now! and our students will be enjoying special Halloween activities in their last class of the month—including dressing up in costumes, making jack-o’-lanterns, reading Halloween books, singing Halloween songs, and finally… Trick-or-Treat!

今月、English Now!ではお子さまの成績表をお渡ししています。（お子さまから必ず受け取ってくださいね！）この成績表では、お子さまの英語力と進歩状況についての評価、そしてご家庭でのサポート方法に関するアドバイスをお伝えしています。
ここで、特にもう一度お伝えしたい、いくつかの重要なポイントを紹介します。
まず、授業に時間通りに来ることがとても大切です。実際には、少し早めに来ていただけるとさらに良いです。宿題を丁寧に確認したり、英語学習の個別サポートも行うことができます。
次に、宿題をきちんとやることです。お子さまが宿題をしっかり仕上げているかどうかご確認をお願いします。当たり前のように思われるかもしれませんが、実際には宿題をやってこないお子さんも見られます。これは学習の進み具合に大きく影響します。授業後にお送りしているキッズメールを必ず確認して、どんな宿題が出ているかチェックしてください。宿題の内容は、たいてい「Let’s Begin」「Let’s Go」のワークブックのページと、その日学習した内容の復習用プリントです。急いで終わらせずに、丁寧に字を書くようサポートしてあげてください。一気にやるのが難しい場合は、何日かに分けて取り組んでみましょう。単語を書くときは、声に出しながら書くのも効果的です。
もしお子様が、宿題の内容で分からない点があるようでしたら、そのページに気軽にコメントを書いてください。（日本語でも英語でもOK・赤ペンがベストです！）先生が確認して、授業でフォローします。
また、オンライン教材もぜひ活用してください。「Let’s Begin」「Let's Go」のテキストとワークブックには、オンラインで利用できる教材がたくさんあります。
パソコン・スマートフォン・タブレットで、テキストの表紙内側にあるURL（www.oup/elt/letsgo）からアクセスできます。登録は不要です。最初は保護者の方のサポートが必要かもしれませんが、年齢によっては慣れればお子さまだけでも使えるようになります。内容は、動画、オンライン辞書、ゲーム、全ての動画・音声教材がダウンロードできるページ、さらにおまけとして壁紙、カード、ぬりえなどのコンテンツも用意されています。生徒さんの多くがこれらの教材を楽しんで使っており、わかりやすくて楽しいので復習にぴったりです。

最後に、成績表でも毎回おすすめしていますが、ご家庭の中を英語でいっぱいの環境にすることが、英語力を伸ばすカギです。ポスター・本・音楽・動画・マンガ・ゲームなど、いろいろ取り入れてみてください。インターネット教材も良いですが、なるべく「アナログ」な実物（本やカードなど）も使ってください。週に1回の習い事ではなく、生活の一部という感覚で自然に英語がある環境を目指しましょう。
10月はハロウィンです。10月最後のレッスンでは、特別なハロウィンアクティビティを行います。仮装をしたり、ジャック・オー・ランタンを作ったり、ハロウィンの絵本を読んだり、ハロウィンの歌を歌ったり、そして最後には…Trick-or-Treat！

Why Pronunciation Matters More Than You Think

In the last few months, English Now! has begun uploading short videos to Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. These are carefully prepared to help our students—specifically with their English pronunciation and intonation. We focus on issues particularly relevant for Japanese English speakers. The pace is slow (for an Instagram reel!) and many examples are provided. So far, we’ve looked at the difficulties of “o” and “th” pronunciations, “really” vs. “rarely,” and “won’t” vs. “want.” More videos will be posted as often as we can. By all means, take advantage of these for your own practice—and share them with friends who may be interested.
But… why give so much attention to pronunciation and intonation? Isn’t that just a small part of mastering English?
Actually, it’s a much bigger part than most people realize. Speaking and listening skills are fundamentally connected. It’s very difficult to catch the English of a native speaker when you can’t speak English that way yourself. True, your English may be understood by others even if it’s basic and your pronunciation or intonation are a bit off. However, you’ll probably struggle to understand the other person’s English if they’re speaking naturally. As you become more able to speak like a native speaker, you’ll find your listening and comprehension improve dramatically.
And it’s not just about the pronunciation of individual words, even though that’s where your study may have begun. Just as “No man lives in isolation!,” no word does either. Words come in phrases, and those phrases have rhythm, flow, and stress. Mastery of vocabulary and its pronunciation is invaluable—but it’s still not enough to fully comprehend natural English. You must also practice how words connect and flow in real phrases, modeling the intonation of native speakers.
This is why English Now! focuses so much on speaking and listening in our classes—and on singing songs in our kids’ classes! Reading and writing practice are, of course, important, but it’s the realistic, situational speaking and listening work with native-level English that enables you to join in and keep up with real conversations. For this reason, our future video posts will also explore phrasal English intonation from time to time—so stay tuned.
Autumn is gradually arriving, and our kids are enjoying October’s Halloween activities! たとえひとつひとつの単語の発音から勉強を始めたとしても、大切なのはそれだけではありません。「No man lives in isolation! 人はひとりでは生きていけない」のと同じ様に、単語も単独では存在することはできません。単語はフレーズの中で使われ、そのフレーズにはリズム、流れ、強弱があります。語彙や単語の発音の習得は非常に重要ですが、それだけでは自然な英語を十分に理解することはできません。単語が実際のフレーズの中でどのようにつながり、流れをつくっているのかを練習し、ネイティブスピーカーのイントネーションを真似することが重要です。
これこそが、English Now!がスピーキングとリスニングに力を入れている理由です。また、キッズクラスで歌を取り入れているのも同じ理由です。もちろん、リーディングやライティングの練習も大切ですが、ネイティブレベルの英語を使った、実際の場面を想定したスピーキングとリスニングの練習こそが、リアルな会話に参加し、ついていく力を養うのです。
こうした理由から、今後投稿する動画では、時折フレーズ単位での英語イントネーションについても取り上げていく予定です。ぜひご期待ください。

How to Study English in 2025

English learning has rapidly been going through profound changes. Numerous fantastic options for study are newly available––so many that it can be confusing. Let’s look at some of the choices you have for your study.
There’s of course online study as has been around for quite some time. Many native speakers––and non-native speakers—offer their coaching services. Some are excellent. However, the weak yen has made the higher quality sites much more expensive than before—unfortunately a point to consider.
There are also plenty of apps ready to help you with your English. Again, there are so many that it’s hard to choose. If you find a good one that suits you, the subscription fee may be worth it if you can stick with it regularly.
Then, there are also lots of YouTube channels, some offering very well-put-together free lessons. However, this is self-study, and unless you pay for extra coaching, you’re on your own.
And of course, there are books, books, books to help you out, too...
However, most recently—and outstandingly—A.I. offers huge benefits for your English study. Sites like ChatGPT are invaluable for checking and correcting your English, giving you tailored translating and preparing your professional correspondence and documents. But it’s the recent advances in audio A.I. assistants with very real voices, like GPT, Claude and Gemini, that can give you fantastic partners for real-time language exchange.
So what about real live teachers with real live classmates in a real live school? Do they still have a place in your English study?
Absolutely—and more-so than ever!
By all means, definitely take advantage of all the other learning tools, both old and new! They’re invaluable for making English an interactive part of your daily life.
BUT...!!
Bring what you learn to the classroom to try it out, fine-tune it, and master it! It’s face-to-face where your English will develop real expression and come alive! —and where you will truly develop mastery!
Moreover, you will join a community of friendly English learners with similar goals who can inspire and motivate you to keep advancing to your English
target. This can be invaluable at those times when you feel that your English has stalled—and we all have such times.
Language is first and foremost human-to-human communi- cation. And language was spoken long before it was ever written. The essence of a language is still found in spoken face-to-face exchange— including all the intonation and nuance and gesture that make it vibrant and deeply expressive... and FUN!
Use all the learning tools you can. The key to your progress— like with anything else—is consistency! Whether trying to lose weight, get fit, master a musical instrument...or learn English, it is consistency with your daily practice that gets you to your goal. And 2025 offers lots of good learning tools to make consistency in learning English easier than ever.

英語学習はここ数年で大きく変わ り、素晴らしい学習方法が次々に 登場しています。その選択肢が多す ぎてどれを選ぶべきかで迷うこと もありますよね。そこで今回は、 英語を学ぶための効果的な学習方 法をいくつかご紹介します。

英語学習に役立つアプリもたくさ んあります。これもまた選ぶのが難 しいほどありますが、もし自分に 合ったアプリを見つけ、定期的に 続けることができるならばアプリ の利用料を支払う価値はあるかも しれません。
また、YouTubeチャンネルも数多く あり、質の高い無料のレッスンが提供されています。ただし、これは あくまで自己学習なので、追加の 指導料金を支払わない限り、基本 的に一人で進めることになります。
そしてもちろん、教科書、参考書 など、テキストを使った学習法もあ りますね。
しかしながら、最近特に注目すべ きなのは、人工知能A.Iを活用した 学習方法です。
例えばChatGPTのようなツールは、 英語のチェックや修正、ニーズに応 じた翻訳、ビジネス文書の作成に 非常に役立ちます。さらに、GPTや Claude、Geminiのような音声A.Iア シスタントは、リアルタイムで言語 交換ができるパートナーとして非 常に優れています。
では、実際に先生とクラスメート がいる「学校」はどうでしょう か?今でも学びの場として重要な のでしょうか?
もちろん必要です。そして、以前よ りもさらに重要になっています。
ぜひ、昔ながらの方法も、新しい 方法も、利用できるツールは活用し てください!それらは、英語を日 常生活の中で積極的に使うために とても役に立ちます。

そこで終わるのではなく、学んだ ことを実際に教室で使ってみて、理 解を深め、マスターすることを目指 してください!対面でのコミュニ ケーションを充実させることによっ て、英語を生きた表現として身につ けることができます。それにより、 本当の意味で習得することができ るのです。
さらに、同じ目標を持つフレンド リーな仲間のコミュニティーに入 ることで、刺激し合い、モチベー ションを保ちながら進んでいける 点も大きなメリットです。誰でも、 学習がうまく進まないと感じるこ とがあるものですが、そんな時に 仲間と支え合えるのはとても励み になることでしょう。

英語学習に役立つアプリもたくさ んあります。これもまた選ぶのが難 しいほどありますが、もし自分に 合ったアプリを見つけ、定期的に 続けることができるならばアプリ の利用料を支払う価値はあるかも しれません。
また、YouTubeチャンネルも数多く あり、質の高い無料のレッスンが提供されています。ただし、これは あくまで自己学習なので、追加の 指導料金を支払わない限り、基本 的に一人で進めることになります。

But is it anything more than a buzzword? Are they really serious about teaching phonics — or just giving it lip service?
Phonics was developed in the last century to help native English-speaking children learn to read.
From the beginning, many kids have trouble learning to read, while many others who had seemed to be reading just fine, stumble and hit a wall where suddenly they can no longer keep up. Phonics came to the rescue to solve these reading problems.
Reading English can be challenging because the names of the letters of the alphabet don’t necessarily correspond to the sounds they represent. For example, “E” and “G” might sound like their letter names sometimes, but often they don’t at all. Moreover, as we know, English spelling can seem very illogical at times.
This is confusing … and makes reading and spelling very difficult to get a handle on for many children. Consequently, many kids develop their own way of faking reading. They memorize what they hear and parrot it back to the teacher (or parent). They memorize how to read a word based on its overall appearance, but not on the individual sounds that make it up. They learn to say the sound at the beginning of the word, and then make intelligent guesses based on context.
However, at some point, as the words get bigger and the sentences get longer, their clever ruse breaks down. The child who had seemed to be reading so well, suddenly can’t.
Phonics is the missing code for reading English. While some kids can intuitively grasp reading without being taught, many others benefit enormously from actually having an explicit code with which they can learn how to read English much more quickly and less painfully.
Phonics is a godsend for such children, and in fact, probably for the majority of our kids.
However … phonics was originally intended for native speakers — not for children who have never spoken English. The phonics systems require that kids are already completely familiar with the sounds of English.
This is the dilemma we face in Japan. Ideally, the kids must learn the sounds of English before we explicitly teach them phonics — and the sooner, the better.
It’s been proven again and again that the younger a child starts learning another language, the more skillful they become at it, and the more naturally they speak it.
Language learning really does start early — really early! In fact, it’s been demonstrated that newborn babies actually cry in their native language! They use the same intonation patterns when they cry that are characteristic of the language they heard while still in their mother’s womb.
As children grow they not only voraciously add information to their brains, they also learn to filter out data determined not essential to survival. What this means for us is that, unfortunately, the children will gradually learn to hear only the sounds of their own language — and learn to not hear other sounds considered unnecessary.
If we want our children to learn English, we must meaningfully expose them to the sounds of English as soon as possible. English must be a natural, ubiquitous part of their everyday environment — so much so that their brain determines that English is meaningful and important for daily life — and consequently deems English sounds important enough to comprehend and retain.
Here in Japan, this means filling your child’s life with English videos, movies, songs, books, games … anything and everything — and making these part of home life together, with all family members joining in as much as possible. English should be fun and connected to joyful experiences for the child. That way, the sounds of English will be significant to them — and will be heard and kept.
In our pre-kids classes at English Now!, we focus exactly on this: positively exposing our very young students to the real sounds of the English language, so that they are already familiar with those sounds when we begin teaching phonics more directly in the Level 1 classes the following year.
